On a true sequential gearbox, the shift lever operates a ratchet mechanism that converts the fore & aft motion of the shift lever into a rotary motion. Usually the shift lever is pulled back to select the adjacent higher gear and pushed forwards to select the adjacent lower gear. Sequential manual transmissions work by providing the driver with the ability to select the gear directly before or after the gear currently engaged. I believe the correction was implemented around the March 01 build date. This was corrected some time during the 2001 model year. There’s no need to discuss the No-Reverse issue as it has been hashed out in several threads, but just in case you aren’t aware, the 99-01 cars with ZF ATs suffered from a defective reverse drum which typically failed before 100K miles. How does the “adaptive” function work? How much data does it collect before adapting and how many algorithms does it have? Does it adapt in Sport mode also, to a different set of algorithms? These answers may depend on which model of course so please specify. It was in 2002 when the change was made from forward-tip to upshift to forward-tip to downshift and has stayed the same since, correct? Why did they make this change? Seems counter intuitive to me.ĭo they all down-shift even in Manual mode when the accelerator is floored? Are there noticeable differences between the two? What was BMW’s the selection criteria for using either a GM or ZF when they were being used simultaneously? What were the changes through the model years, if any, from both companies? Are they all called Steptronic by BMW? Are they all 5-speed? Are they all “adaptive” to driver style? Do model differences function differently, ie shift faster/smoother/more responsive whether in manual or auto mode? I know the paddle shifters were offered in 2005 or 2006, are those 6-speeds?
I know they were sourced from both GM and ZF. Can you guys help me determine the differences (manufacturer/model/function) in automatic transmissions offered on the E46 and in what model years?
